Best Fire Pit Tables

Fire tables that still work as tables — ledge width, certification and the rectangular format that seats six properly.

By Stephen V.Last updated How we pick

A fire pit table is only worth its premium over a fire bowl if the ledge around the flame is wide enough to put a glass on. That is the single test, and it is the one most roundups skip. On the small square budget tables the surround is narrow enough to be decorative; on the 44-by-32-inch rectangular format there is genuine table on both sides of the burner, and six people can sit round it with plates.

For most buyers the Ciays 28-inch is the sensible pick: 50,000 BTU, a lid so it works as an ordinary patio table when the burner is off, and a CSA listing stated on the listing itself — which is unusual at this price and matters if an HOA or a campground ever asks. The Endless Summer 44-inch rectangle is the one to buy if the table has to actually function as a table, and the 30-inch tabletop model is the answer for a small patio where a dining-height unit would dominate.

As with every gas pit here, the 20 lb propane tank is not included, and a table only earns its design if the tank hides neatly inside the base rather than standing beside it. Prices below are live and dated. If you want the flame without the furniture, the propane fire bowls are cheaper and portable.

Ciays 28-Inch CSA-Listed Propane Fire Pit Table (50,000 BTU)

Ciays 28-Inch CSA-Listed Propane Fire Pit Table (50,000 BTU)

The cheapest fire pit table here that states a CSA listing on the listing itself, which is the thing worth paying for in this category — a 50,000 BTU burner hidden inside furniture is exactly where certification matters. Twenty-eight inches square with a lid means it works as an ordinary patio table when the burner is off, which is the real appeal of a fire table over a fire bowl. Build quality is what you would expect at this price: fine, not heirloom.

2
Endless Summer 44" x 32" Rectangular LP Gas Fire Pit Table (40,000 BTU)

Endless Summer 44" x 32" Rectangular LP Gas Fire Pit Table (40,000 BTU)

The rectangular format is the one to buy if the table has to work as a table. At 44 by 32 inches there is real surface on both sides of the burner, so six people can sit round it with plates and glasses rather than balancing things on a four-inch ledge. Forty thousand BTU is lower than the budget squares, which matters less than you would think on a long burner — it is spread over more linear flame. It is the most expensive fire table here and the only one that looks like it belongs with a dining set.

Endless Summer 30" Gas Fire Pit Table with Resin Mantel

Endless Summer 30" Gas Fire Pit Table with Resin Mantel

Endless Summer is the brand that makes fire tables look like furniture rather than appliances, and the resin mantel is why — it reads as stone from two feet away and does not get painfully hot the way a bare steel ledge does. Thirty inches is the useful size for a four-chair circle. You pay roughly 80 dollars more than the budget square tables for that, and the honest answer is that it is a looks-and-comfort upgrade, not a heat one.

BALI OUTDOORS 50,000 BTU Square Propane Fire Pit Table

BALI OUTDOORS 50,000 BTU Square Propane Fire Pit Table

BALI OUTDOORS sits in the same budget bracket as Ciays and competes on the same terms: a square 50,000 BTU table with the tank hidden in the base. It is worth cross-shopping the two on the day, because they trade places on price regularly and the specifications they publish are close to identical. Where this one tends to win is finish — the ledge around the burner is usually wider, which matters a lot if people will put glasses down.

Endless Summer 30" Tabletop Steel Propane Gas Fire Table

Endless Summer 30" Tabletop Steel Propane Gas Fire Table

A low 30-inch gas table at close to fire-bowl money, and the sensible pick for a small patio or a balcony where a full-height fire table would dominate. It sits at coffee-table height, which is where a fire actually wants to be if people are in lounge chairs rather than dining chairs. Steel rather than resin or tile keeps the price down and the ledge hot, so treat the surround as decoration rather than a place to set a glass.

How to choose a fire pit table

Measure the ledge, not the table. A 28-inch square table with a 20-inch burner opening leaves four inches of surround, which holds a bottle precariously and nothing else. The rectangular format wins here because the burner is linear and the surface either side of it is genuinely usable. If people will be eating at the table, that difference is the whole purchase decision.

Then decide what the top is made of. Painted steel is cheapest and gets hot enough that the surround becomes decoration. A resin mantel reads as stone from two feet away and stays touchable with the burner running. A ceramic tile top is cooler still and chips if something heavy lands on it. This is the part you interact with every time you use the table, so it is worth more attention than the BTU figure.

BTU is flame size. The tables here run 40,000 to 50,000 BTU and the higher number is not reliably the warmer table: a long linear burner spreads 40,000 over more flame than a round burner concentrates 50,000 into. Two of these listings publish no BTU figure at all, and our spec tables say “Not published” rather than guessing.

Check for a lid and a cover. A lid turns the table back into an ordinary patio table between uses and keeps rain off the burner, which is the component you least want full of water. Not every model includes one. A proper weather cover is worth adding regardless, because a fire table is a large flat object that collects everything the sky produces.

And be realistic about warmth. A fire table is a social object, not a heater. The flame sits at table height behind a wind guard, and most of its energy goes up. If what you actually want is to be warm on a cold evening, a patio heater does that job far better for similar money, and a wood fire does it better still.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best fire pit table?

The Ciays 28-inch for value — 50,000 BTU, a lid, and a CSA listing stated on the listing itself, which is rare at that price. The Endless Summer 44-by-32-inch rectangle is the better buy if the table genuinely has to work as a table for six people, because there is real surface either side of the linear burner.

Do fire pit tables give off much heat?

Not much, relative to their BTU ratings. The flame sits at table height, usually behind a wind guard, and most of the energy goes upward rather than radiating at seated bodies. A fire table is a social centrepiece. If warmth is the goal, a patio heater or a wood fire pit will do far more for the same money.

Can you put drinks on a fire pit table?

On some of them. It depends entirely on the width of the ledge around the burner and what it is made of. A narrow painted-steel surround gets hot and holds almost nothing; a resin mantel or a tile top with real width either side of a linear burner is genuinely usable. Measure the surround before you buy, not the overall table.

Does a fire pit table need a propane tank?

Yes, and it is almost never included. Every table here expects a standard 20 lb tank, and the better designs conceal it inside the base rather than leaving it standing alongside. Check that detail on the listing — a visible tank next to a piece of patio furniture rather defeats the point of buying furniture.

Are fire pit tables allowed on a deck?

Usually they are the lower-risk option on a deck, because a gas burner produces no flying embers. You still want the clearances the manual specifies and ideally a protective mat underneath. Check your decking manufacturer's guidance as well: composite decking scorches at lower temperatures than timber, and a heavy table concentrates weight on small feet.
