Best Wood Stove Brands

A shortlist of the best wood burning stove brands sold online, what each one is actually good at, and the brands you will only ever buy through a dealer.

By Stephen V.Last updated How we pick

Of the wood stove brands you can buy online without a dealer visit, Ashley Hearth is the one to start with. Its stoves publish a heated-area figure, its model numbers are stable enough that parts are findable years later, and the AW2020-P ships with legs and a pedestal, which quietly saves you a purchase. It is not the cheapest brand here and it is not the most interesting. It is the one that turns up, heats a house, and can be serviced.

The rest of the shortlist splits by job.US Stove is the broadest range at the price — freestanding stoves, inserts, barrel kits and the non-electric Wiseway pellet stove — and the brand to look at if you want a blower included. Cleveland Iron Works builds deliberately simple stoves for cabins and shops, where one burn rate and nothing to adjust is a feature. Winnerwell is the portable specialist: stainless tent stoves bought once and used for a decade of hot-tent camping. ComfortBilt is the pellet brand here, with the biggest published heated areas on the page.

And the brands you have heard most about — Jotul, Vermont Castings, Blaze King, Morso, Hearthstone, Pacific Energy, Lopi — are dealer brands. They are not worse. They are sold with a site survey, an installer and a chimney quote, and you will not find a trustworthy price for one on a product page. We do not list prices we cannot verify, so they are discussed below rather than ranked.

How this is funded:we earn a commission if you buy through our links, at no extra cost to you. It never changes which pit or heater we recommend, and we’ll tell you when we’d skip one. Full disclosure.

Ashley Hearth AW2020-P 2,000 sq ft Wood Stove

Ashley Hearth AW2020-P 2,000 sq ft Wood Stove

A 2,000 square foot rating is whole-house territory, and that is what separates this from the small stoves people buy to warm one room. It ships with both legs and a pedestal so you can set it up either way, and Ashley Hearth is one of the long-standing mainstream US stove brands rather than a marketplace label. Treat the square-footage rating as a maximum under ideal conditions, not a promise — and budget for the flue, the hearth pad and a professional install, which will cost more than the stove.

2
US Stove US1100E-BL 1,200 sq ft Wood Stove with Blower

US Stove US1100E-BL 1,200 sq ft Wood Stove with Blower

The blower is the reason to pick this one. A wood stove without a fan heats by radiation, which means the room it is in gets hot and the next room stays cold; a blower pushes that heat out into the house and makes a 1,200 square foot rating behave much more like 1,200 square feet. US Stove is a mainstream brand and this sits at a sensible price for a mid-size stove. It still needs a proper flue, a hearth pad and a code-compliant install.

Cleveland Iron Works Single Burn Rate Wood Stove

Cleveland Iron Works Single Burn Rate Wood Stove

A single-burn-rate stove is a deliberately simple design: one air setting, no damper fiddling, built to run at the rate it was certified at. For a cabin, a workshop or a garage that is often exactly what you want — fewer controls to get wrong and fewer ways to smolder a stove into a creosote problem. It is the cheapest stove from a recognized brand here, and the simplicity is the reason.

ComfortBilt HP22 Pellet Stove, 2,800 sq ft, 55 lb Hopper

ComfortBilt HP22 Pellet Stove, 2,800 sq ft, 55 lb Hopper

The pellet stove to compare a wood stove against, because it is the one whose figures make the trade honest: the listing states 2,800 square feet and a 55 lb hopper, which is roughly a day of unattended heat at moderate output. That is the pellet case in one line — you load it once and walk away, instead of feeding a fire. The costs are a mains power dependency (no electricity, no heat), an auger and fan that are wear parts, and pellets you have to buy rather than split.

Winnerwell Nomad Medium Tent Stove

Winnerwell Nomad Medium Tent Stove

The hot-tent stove people keep rather than replace. It costs three to four times a marketplace tent stove, and what that buys is stainless construction that does not warp out of shape after a season of hard fires, a flue that seals properly, and the fact that every part of it is still available in five years. The listing describes it for tents, shelters and camping. If you winter camp more than a handful of nights a year, this is the one that stops being an expense and starts being equipment.

#2Best range at the price

US Stove US1100E-BL 1,200 sq ft Wood Stove with Blower

The blower is the reason to pick this one. A wood stove without a fan heats by radiation, which means the room it is in gets hot and the next room stays cold; a blower pushes that heat out into the house and makes a 1,200 square foot rating behave much more like 1,200 square feet. US Stove is a mainstream brand and this sits at a sensible price for a mid-size stove. It still needs a proper flue, a hearth pad and a code-compliant install.

What’s good

  • Blower included — heat actually reaches adjoining rooms
  • 1,200 sq ft rating suits most single-story homes or large open plans
  • Mainstream US brand with available spares
  • Priced below the 2,000 sq ft stoves by a clear margin

Trade-offs

  • Blower needs mains power — it does nothing in an outage
  • Flue and install costs are on top, as with any stove
  • Fan noise is audible in a quiet room
  • Emissions rating is not published on this listing

What’s good

  • One air setting — very little to get wrong

  • Suits intermittent cabin or workshop use

Trade-offs

  • No low-and-slow setting — you get the burn rate it was built for

#5Best portable brand

  • Parts and accessories stay available
  • Listing states it is for tents, shelters and camping

What actually separates one wood stove brand from another

Almost every stove in this price range is a steel or cast iron box with a door, a baffle and an air control. The brand differences that matter are not romantic:

  • Does it publish a heated-area figure? Ashley Hearth, US Stove and ComfortBilt do on the models here. Several brands do not, and a stove sold without one is being sold on looks. Treat any published figure as a best case in an open-plan, well-insulated space anyway.
  • Will parts exist in five years? This is the real argument for an established hearth brand. Door gaskets, glass, baffles and blowers are consumables on a stove that gets used, and a stable model number is how you find them. Ashley Hearth and US Stove both carry model numbers you can search.
  • Is there anything electrical?A blower is a genuine comfort upgrade and a part that can fail. US Stove includes one on the US1100E-BL. A pellet stove adds an auger, an igniter and a control board — which is why the non-electric Wiseway exists at all.
  • What is the emissions rating?Several of these listings do not publish one, and the specs tables say so rather than guessing. This matters: EPA certification status affects what you are allowed to install in many jurisdictions, and it is worth checking against the EPA’s own certified-stove list before you buy.

The brands, and who each one is for

Ashley Hearth

A mainstream American hearth brand, and the most conventional choice here. The AW2020-P publishes 2,000 square feet of heated area, includes both mounting options in the box, and sits at a price that undercuts anything from a dealer by a wide margin. If you want a stove to heat a house and you would rather not think about the brand again, this is the one. Ashley also makes the AP5617-W pellet stove with the biggest hopper in this registry at 90 lb.

US Stove

The widest range at the lowest prices: the US1100E-BL freestanding stove with a blower included, the US1800E insert, the BSK1000 barrel stove kit for a barn or workshop, and the Wiseway non-electric pellet stove. Nothing here is a luxury object, and the value per published square foot is the best on the page. The caveat is consistency: it is a broad catalog, so read the specific listing rather than trusting the badge.

Cleveland Iron Works

Interesting because it goes the other way. The single-burn-rate stove has no burn adjustment at all, which sounds like a downgrade and is not: in a cabin, a shop or a garage, a stove with one setting is one fewer thing to get wrong, and there is nothing to leave open overnight. The listing does not publish a heated area, so size it by the room. Cleveland also makes the small 24 lb-hopper pellet stove on our small pellet stove picks.

ComfortBilt

The pellet specialist, and the brand with the biggest published figures here: 2,800 square feet on both the HP22 freestanding stove and the HP22i insert. Pellets buy you thermostat-style control and a day of unattended heat; they cost you mains power, bagged fuel and a vent. Our wood stove vs pellet stove comparison works that trade through properly.

Winnerwell, VEVOR and Guide Gear

A separate category: portable stoves for tents, trailers and shelters, not houses. Winnerwell is the buy-it-once brand, stainless and well-finished. VEVOR and Guide Gear are the value options, with chimney pipe included and less refinement. All three belong with our tent stove picks rather than with house heating.

The dealer brands, and whether you are missing out

Jotul, Morso, Blaze King, Hearthstone, Vermont Castings, Pacific Energy and Lopi are the brands a chimney sweep will name if you ask. What they genuinely offer is long burn times from sophisticated secondary combustion, cast iron or soapstone bodies with real thermal mass, catalytic models that hold a low output for many hours, and a dealer who surveys your chimney and stands behind the install.

What you give up by buying one online instead is mostly the install — and on a wood stove the install is not optional. A chimney that does not draw turns any stove, at any price, into a smoking box. If your house needs a new flue or a liner, the dealer route is frequently the cheaper total number even though the appliance costs more. If you already have a sound, correctly sized chimney, the brands above will heat your house for a fraction of the price.

We will not quote you a Jotul price, because any number we published would be out of date and unverifiable. Every price on this page comes from the live listing and carries the date it was read.

Shopping by budget or by feature instead of by brand? best budget wood stoves ranks on heat per dollar and is explicit about the install cost, and best wood cookstoves filters the same field down to the stoves with a flat, usable top plate.

Before you choose on brand, check these three things

  1. Your chimney. Height, liner, condition and diameter decide whether any stove works. Have it inspected first. Our explainer on how a wood stove works covers why draw dominates everything else.
  2. Your clearances. Measure the alcove, the wall material and the floor protection you will need. Clearances rule models out before brands do.
  3. Your local rules. Many jurisdictions require an EPA-certified appliance. Check the model against the EPA’s own certified list, not the marketing copy, and see our safety guide for what certification does and does not tell you. EPA certified wood stoves has the two-minute check for a specific model.

Refinishing rather than replacing

A sound older stove from any of these makers can be made to look new for the price of a can and an afternoon, which is one of the better value moves in wood heat. Best wood stove paint covers the 1200 and 1400 degree coatings, brush against aerosol, and the prep that decides whether the finish survives a season — plus how to match an older bronze enamel rather than making the repair obvious in black.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best wood stove brand?

Of the brands sold online without a dealer, Ashley Hearth: it publishes a heated-area figure, uses stable model numbers so parts stay findable, and includes both legs and a pedestal on the AW2020-P. US Stove offers the widest range for less money, Cleveland Iron Works is the pick for a cabin or shop, and ComfortBilt is the pellet brand.

Are Jotul and Blaze King better than the brands sold on Amazon?

They are more sophisticated — longer burn times, heavier bodies, catalytic options — and they are sold through dealers with a site survey and an installer. That install is a real part of the value, because a chimney that does not draw ruins any stove. If your flue is already sound, the online brands will heat your house for far less. We do not publish dealer prices we cannot verify.

Which wood stove brand has the best warranty?

Warranty terms are not published on these product listings, so we do not rank on them — a figure we could not read on a dated visit would be a guess. What you can check yourself is more useful: whether the brand has a stable model number, and whether gaskets, glass, baffles and blowers for that model are sold separately.

Is US Stove a good brand?

For value, yes. It is the broadest low-cost range here — freestanding stoves, a fireplace insert, a barrel stove kit and the non-electric Wiseway pellet stove — and the US1100E-BL includes a blower, which most stoves at the price do not. Because the catalog is wide, judge the specific model's published specs rather than the badge.

Does the brand matter more than the size of the stove?

No. An oversized stove run too cool is the most common wood-heat mistake, and it causes smoldering, glass sooting and creosote regardless of the badge on the door. Get the output and the clearances right first, then choose between brands on published figures and parts availability.
