About Coal & Char

Budget-first charcoal grilling help from someone who reads the manuals and does the math — not a lab coat in sight.

Coal & Charexists to answer one question honestly: which charcoal grill should a budget-minded buyer actually buy? The charcoal category is full of “we tested 20 grills” roundups that lead with premium picks and bury the price. We do the opposite — we rank budget-first, show the real cost to run a grill, and tell you plainly which features are worth paying for and which to skip.

Who writes this

Coal & Char is written by Stephen V.. Stephen is a charcoal-grilling enthusiast — genuinely into this stuff — who went down the rabbit hole picking a first grill and never came back. He is not a professional pitmaster and Coal & Char does not run a test lab. What he does is read the manuals, pull the published specs into one honest comparison, do the cost-to-run math on charcoal, and check every temperature against USDA food-safety guidance — then say plainly which grill a budget buyer should actually buy, and which features to skip.

That framing matters, so we are precise about it: we are enthusiasts, not professional pitmasters, and we do not run a test lab. We have not cooked on every grill we compare, and we say so on every page. What we offer instead is something the lab-testing sites often skip — the actual published specifications, the cost-to-run arithmetic, and honest “skip this” advice, all of it checkable.

How we pick

Every recommendation is reasoned from a product's published specs (cooking area, materials, capacity), read off the retailer's own listing on a dated visit, plus the cost of the charcoal it burns and how it holds up over time. Prices are pulled live and dated, and every temperature we cite comes from USDA food-safety guidance. We explain the whole process on our how we pick page.

How the site is funded

Coal & Charis free to read because some of our links to products are affiliate links: if you buy through one, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases. A commission never changes which grill we recommend — the reasoning is identical whether a link earns us anything or not, and we will happily point you to the cheaper option when it is the better buy. The full details are on our how we make money page.

What we will never do

We do not publish fake reviews, invented star ratings, or “in our testing” claims about gear we have not tested. We do not fabricate prices — if a live price is unavailable, we say “check price” rather than show a stale number. And we do not let commission decide a ranking. If you ever spot a factual error, tell us on the contact page and we will check it against the source and fix it. Our full standards are in our editorial policy.
