Outdoor heat is a category full of “we tested 20 fire pits” roundups that lead with the premium brand and bury the price. We do the opposite — we rank on value, show what each option really costs to run for an evening, and tell you plainly which features are worth paying for and which to skip.

Who writes this

Coal & Char is written by Stephen V.. Stephen is an outdoor-fire enthusiast — genuinely into this stuff — who went down the rabbit hole picking a first fire pit and never came back. He is not a fire officer or a hearth installer, and Coal & Char does not run a test lab. What he does is read the manuals, pull the published specs into one honest comparison, work out what each option really costs to run per evening, and check every safety figure against EPA, CPSC and Smokey Bear guidance — then say plainly which pit, stove or heater a value-minded buyer should actually buy, and which features to skip.

That framing matters, so we are precise about it: we are enthusiasts, not fire officers or hearth installers, and we do not run a test lab. We have not burned in every pit we compare, and we say so on every page. What we offer instead is something the lab-testing sites often skip — the actual published specifications, the running-cost arithmetic, sourced safety guidance, and honest “skip this” advice, all of it checkable.

How we pick

Every recommendation is reasoned from a product's published specs (diameter, BTU rating, heated area, material), read off the retailer's own listing on a dated visit, plus what it costs to feed and how it holds up outdoors.
